10 Rock Songs That Were Written As An Apology

1. Yesterday - The Beatles

Before they had even gotten to their more ambitious period in the mid '60s, the Beatles had practically run the gamut of what you could do with the love song format. Going through their first few albums, nearly every single track had to do with love affairs in one form or another, from breakup songs to puppy love songs that all of their female fans went nuts for. When Paul McCartney got something more sophisticated in his head though, he draped the song in a lot more melancholy than the band had before.

Whereas John Lennon was normally the more paranoid character when it came to his love songs, Yesterday was one of the first times in the Beatles' canon where the relationship didn't work out. After kicking around with the phrase Scrambled Eggs, what Paul ended up with was a song with the narrator finally on his own, not knowing what he did wrong and yearning to find some way to get back with his girlfriend.

As a subtle string quartet plays in the background, you can tell that the character in this song means to use this song as an apology to his old flame, but the fact that he doesn't know what he said wrong might mean that he'll never find that sort of happiness again. All we're left with is some stunning harmonies and Paul yearning for what could have been if he had only found the right words.
