10 Rock Songs That Were Written As An Apology

2. Purple Rain - Prince

Throughout every phase of his career, nothing really seemed to be off the table for Prince. While he started in the world of funk and soul on his first handful of releases, the Purple One was down to make any kind of music that suited him, from rock to pop to even jazz when he got into the '90s. When he was looking to make his big breakthrough though, he found himself dipping into the heartland for his biggest ballad.

Looking to try a song in the vein of someone like Bob Seger, Purple Rain started out as a bittersweet goodbye from a man to his lover, as he looks back on all of the time that they've had. As the dramatic piano chords play underneath him, Prince feels like he's on the verge of breaking down in sections of this song, saying that he never meant to cause them any kind of pain and always saw them as more than just a weekend lover.

By the time he reaches the final verses, his voice doesn't even seem to do him justice, as his guitar takes over and cries in agony over his breakup, going for long held notes that feel like his internal angst behind let loose in song. That purple rain may be falling down from the sky, but it's not necessarily the happiest of endings. That rain could be him finding some sort of peace, but it could also be the tears still pouring down his face as he plays the song.
