10 Rock Stars Who Didn't Like Their Most Famous Songs
4. Pete Townshend- Pinball Wizard
The Who's Tommy is one of the few examples of what could be considered a perfect album. Set around a rock opera detailing a deaf, dumb, and blind kid's warped few of reality, each track seems integral in bringing the story to life. At the same time, Pete Townshend still has particular disdain for the album centerpiece "Pinball Wizard."
Originally, the album was finalized by the band without the inclusion of the infectious hit, but Townshend was encouraged to write a song that he thought could be a hit for the record. With his artistic vision being somewhat compromised, Townshend begrudgingly went through different moods before coming up with the basis of what is now "Pinball Wizard."
Though the song finally unveils the titular character Tommy's immaculate touch on a pinball machine, Townshend still feels that the song sticks out like a sore thumb on the record. With the previous tracks dealing with the protagonist's dealings with abuse, "Pinball Wizard" certainly doesn't go with the theme, but its drastic tonal shift turns the record from a sad lament into glorious triumph in an instant. The track is a bonafied rock classic, but that doesn't stop its composer from seeing it as a needless bit of filler.
