1. Down With The Sickness
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fq3QmtV8vT0Was there ever any doubt?
From the ominous and emphatic tribal drums, to Draiman’s trademark “Oh-wa-a-a-ah” 'monkey noise’, to the brooding sensation brought about by the lyrics, to the infamous ‘child abuse’ bridge, this is Disturbed’s magnum opus, without a doubt.
This song contains all of the best elements of Disturbed’s musical genius. The riffs are perfect in that they complement the ominous lyrics perfectly. The build-up to every chorus leads to an epic crescendo of metallic sounds, and the song’s overall intensity sends blood coursing through the listener’s veins in a way that few other Disturbed songs, if any, can match.
As for that infamous ‘abuse segment', it is not meant to be reflective of actual child abuse. The ‘mommy’ being referred to is allegedly ‘Mother Society’, and that the child’s individuality is being forced out in favour of conformity. The child fighting back can therefore be interpreted as a backlash against greater society trying to force the individual into confirming to society’s standards and expectations. The segment can be best described as ‘disturbing’, which is what makes it the quintessential Disturbed song.
These elements all put together thus shouldn’t lead to any surprises that this song tops any and all lists of Disturbed’s songs.
