7 Heavy Metal Songs About Space Travel
1. Saxon - The Eagle Has Landed
With First Man having recently been released in theaters, it is fitting to close with a song that makes reference to the landing of Apollo 11 on the moon in 1969.
Conspiracy theories aside about whether the landing was fabricated or not, Saxon’s The Eagle Has Landed recounts some details of the event itself (e.g. the statement regarding a “giant step for mankind” and “placed the lonely flag out there in isolation,”) but much of it refers either to the trip (“voyage of an eagle, blasting to the stars”), the impact of the event (“you take the hopes and dreams of men”) or the incredible hype surrounding the prevalent “space race” between the United States and the Soviet Union (“the world is in celebration as we wait for your return.”).
Without specific mention of words spoken or actions taken after the landing of Apollo 11, the core of this song is literally just about traveling through space to “another world.”
