10 Celebrities Who Were Murdered By Their Own Fans
1. Gianni Versace
In late April and early May 1997, San Diego native Andrew Cunanan went on a killing spree. Over a span of 12 days, Cunanan killed four people in three states. He got added onto the FBI's most-wanted list and went dormant for two months. When he emerged, he claimed his final victim: Gianni Versace.
Cunanan shot the fashion designer twice on the steps of his home in South Beach, Florida in broad daylight. Versace had just returned from a walk. He had only been in South Beach for five days. Cunanan had been there for two months, presumably waiting for Versace to return from his touring circuit.
There was speculation that Versace and Cunanan may have been lovers but no link between the two could be proven. Cunanan's first victim, Jeffrey Trail, had been an old friend he had fallen out with. Whether the two men had an affair is unknown. His second victim, David Madson, was a former lover. No connection could be proven between Cunanan and his third victim, Chicago developer Lee Miglin, though he's just the kind of man Cunanan liked to date. Cunanan was well-known in San Diego gay circles for dating and leeching off wealthy older men.
Only his fourth victim, William Reese, appears unconnected. Cunanan killed the New Jersey cemetery caretaker so he could steal his truck. Cunanan took his own life 10 days after killing Versace so his motive remains unknown. The two men allegedly met in 1991 in San Francisco. Versace's family claimed it never happened, while Cunanan bragged about the chance encounter and extensively embellished it for his friends.
