Most websites have their own individual style; Facebook has its trademark blue tone, Google has its recognisable logo and Twitter's blue bird is unmistakable. Reddit is an anomaly when you consider that it regularly receives just as many views as these sites, but its aesthetics are relatively low budget. Text is displayed in boxes on a white background, and their is a lack of polish which fits the site. While this has all added to Reddit's charm, it was not an original concept. The co-founders told the Guardian that the scaled down look was pretty much stolen from a website named Delicious, which specialised in bookmarking. The look of Reddit, with its barren look and user initiated content helped the website to grow, as it meant that those using the site were the ones shaping it, rather than having a structure set down on top of them. This plain look feeds into the 'lean' philosophy mentioned earlier; the founders did not want the website to seem overly polished, they wanted it to do its job...and it certainly has done that!
