Doctors Without Borders, a healthcare charity, benefited tremendously after finding itself the subject of the Reddit effect. Usually the website receives traffic of about 4,000 hits on an average Sunday. Reddit managed to get this number to a staggering 50,000. Initially the charity was being supported by a Christianity thread. The atheism thread on the site quickly took up this plight, seeing as it had considerably more users, and the charity received over $180,000. This isnt the only example of Reddit users performing incredibly selfless deeds Direct Relief International received $185,000 after Haiti was hit by the destructive earthquake a few years ago. Communities on Reddit are competitive, but with the right guidance this competition often creates great outcomes. For example, when the Faraja Orphanage was attacked, leaving a volunteer with a machete wound to his head, Redditors were quick to take up the cause. Within the first 24 hours of this barbaric attack the Reddit community raised a staggering $70,000 for the orphanage. This helped secure the orphanage, saving peoples lives. Reddit is more than just a gateway to the internet it has helped people across the world with its modern philanthropy. What did you think? Is there any interesting facts we left out?
