10 Inventions That Will Make Harry Potter A Reality

6. Apparition and Floo Powder = Teleports And Wormholes

What with Apparition and Floo Powder in the offering, wizards have got the whole teleporting thing nailed. It sort of makes you wonder why they take the train (yes, I know I should probably read Hogwarts: A History).

Could we muggles ever master the art of instantaneous travel without all of that tedious mucking about with cars, trains and buses?

Well, the obvious answer to apparition would appear to be in the long-standing sci-fi world of teleportation.

Further supporting the argument that wizards are simply masters of quantum physics, even muggle scientists have managed to create a tentative quantum teleport. This takes advantage of a principle in quantum physics known as "superposition" and can successfully teleport quantum particles.

So, could we ever use it to teleport humans? Well technically there’s no fundamental law of physics preventing it, but scaling a technology up from the quantum world into the classical world is an incredibly difficult process.

So, that's apparition out for the time being, but what about the Floo Network?

Well, the idea of a network of physical passages connecting distant parts of space sounds an awful lot like a wormhole, doesn't it?

Theoretically speaking, it is possible to travel through a wormhole faster than the speed of light, arriving at your destination almost instantaneously (even at the speed of light, it would only take a fraction of a second to get from Dufftown - which is near Hogwarts - to Diagon Alley in London).

Now all we need to do is find some wormholes and build fireplaces around them. You could even chuck some copper sulfate into the flames to turn them green for the full effect.
