15 Surprising Hidden Meanings Behind Rude Words

7. Crap

What it means: A simple, blunt expression of anger or disappointment, usually thanks to ominous circumstances. When to use it: When your mum told you to defrost the chicken for Sunday dinner but you were too busy being hungover and eating baked goods and you hear her car pull up in the driveway. Where it came from: In English usage, crap seemingly derives from the old French word for "chaff" - or the unwanted waste from farming wheat. American usage seems to suggest that the word was born from Mr Crapper himself. That's right, the word 'crap' is named after (if you can call it that) Thomas Crapper, the man who invented the toilet. Fun fact: Game of Thrones actor Kit Harrington is a descendent of Mr Crapper.
