17 Strangest Abandoned Places In The World

9. Wonderland Amusement Park - China

Another in our series of abandoned theme parks, China's Wonderland has a more tumultuous history than even Jazzland, if you can believe it. Work began in the late '90s on the park that was meant to be China's answer to Disneyland just north of Beijing but it ground to a halt due to a political corruption scandal that damaged the resort's chances of success beyond repair. Despite investment from high-standing figures and the hopes that thrilling rides and glitzy attractions would bring millions of visitors, it seems unlikely that Wonderland will ever open its gates to guests and will merely be relegated to appearing on lists like this.

8. Disney€™s - Discovery Island, Florida

Ever been to Disney World in Florida? If so, ever heard of Disney's Discovery Island on Lake Buena Vista? If not, that's probably because the former wildlife attraction placed in the centre of the world-famous resort was abandoned shortly after its completion. This was supposedly due to human-killing bacteria was found in the surrounding water, which doesn't really make a visit to Disney World any time soon all that appealing to us.

7. Chateau Miranda - Belgium

This stunning but somewhat eerie castle sits in Celle, Belgium, where it was built by French aristocrats who were fleeing the revolution in their home country. It has a rich history including being used as an orphanage both during and after the Second World War, but was left to decay in 1980 as the descendants of the original owners refused to allow the Belgian government to tend to its upkeep and maintenance, bizarrely. They must have wanted to inspire the ghost stories and 'creepy buildings' articles that have sprung up around it.
