21 Problems Only Dancers Will Understand

13. The Terror That Is Turn-Out

Unfortunately, turn-out is one of those less-than-fun things that spread from ballet into the other styles. And, even more unfortunately, you either have it or you don't. You can work on your turn-out, but it will be a long and painful process, and you'll eventually have to accept that your joints just don't rotate that way. Of course, teachers won't accept "I can't" as an excuse, so you can bet that you'll be working on that turn-out for the rest of your dance career. Joy.

12. Being Really Good At One Style And Useless At Another

Nobody's perfect, not even dancers. You might be able to tap your butt off but be unable to pop and lock to save your life, or maybe your jazz walks would bring Fosse to tears but your petit adagio looks more like a giraffe performing an awkward interpretive dance than a graceful swan. It's a universal(ly sad) phenomenon that, for some unfair reason, there will be that certain style that your body just will not do. At least you know that, when your time comes to shine, you really shine.
