Harry Greb is like the James Dean of the boxing world. He died so long ago and was so young (32) that most people outside of boxing have never heard of him but everyone inside boxing knows he was one the greatest fighters boxing has ever produced. Born in 1894 in Pittsburgh, Greb logged almost 300 bouts in his career that started in 1913. By 1915 Greb was fighting world-class opposition and winning.
What makes Greb so great though is he would fight anyone regardless of weight, size or division. He fought against current, future and former light heavyweight and heavyweight champions and fought so often that he still holds the record for the most number of fights in a calendar year (37). Arguably his greatest achievement was being the only man to beat light heavyweight legend Gene Tunney. He did it with his trademark 'Pittsburgh Windmill' style of being incredibly aggressive and swarming all over his opponent.
What makes his success all the more amazing is that from 1921 onwards he was blind in one eye. He sustained damage to his retina in a fight with Kid Norfolk but carried on fighting (and went on to win the fight against Norfolk). He died following complications after surgery on his respiratory tract following a car crash in 1926.
