Having mightily impressed with a Golden Boot performance at the 1986 World Cup, Gary Lineker was signed by Barcelona for close to £3,000,000 (a considerable amount at the time). His first season was a fantastic success in which he scored 21 goals, including all three in a 3-2 victory over arch-rivals Real Madrid. He spent two further years at the Nou Camp, but was inexplicably shoved out on the right of midfield by manager Johan Cruyff. He subsequently struggled to match his early form, and eventually lost his place in the starting line up. A successful return to England followed, which saw Lineker help Tottenham Hotspur to the 1991 FA Cup.
