In his six years with Ajax, Klaassen captained the side, made 181 appearances, and scored 55 times. He was signed by Everton with the money raised by the sale of Romelu Lukaku to be the Toffees' prime creator, but due to competition for places as a result of Gylfi Sigurdsson and Wayne Rooney playing a similar role, he played just 251 minutes of league football this season.

In the limited game time he's had, the 25-year-old has failed to impress despite playing in his favoured position. Former manager Ronald Koeman said of the Dutch midfielder:-

I was disappointed with Davy. In retrospect, you may have to doubt whether the step was not too big.

One of many failed deals from Everton last summer, Klaassen may have to look elsewhere for regular football in order to re-establish himself as the player who was voted Dutch Footballer of the Year in 2016.
