Manchester City spent over £60m on Eliaquim Mangala and Nicolas Otamendi, but do not have a lot to show for their money. One player who would be a sound investment is Real Madrid's Raphael Varane. Long touted as a future world class defender, Varane has struggled to nail down a permanent place at the Bernabeu, with Sergio Ramos and Pepe usually being the preferred pairing, regardless of their form. Varane has received more football since Zinedine Zidane stepped up to take charge of first team affairs, but his development appears to have stalled, which could suggest he needs a new challenge. One of the central defender's biggest assets is his pace, but he cannot afford to rely on that to always get him out of trouble. Paired with Vincent Kompany, the French defender could really begin to assert himself as one of the best centre backs in world football. If he could form a strong partnership with the big Belgian, then City may not have to worry as much when the skipper is inevitably ruled out by injury. Aged only 22, Varane would be the ideal signing to base the foundation of Manchester City's future around.
