The goal came in the 38th minute. England 1-1 France as the game continues... England defender Joleon Lescott sent England into the lead against France in Group D's opening match at the Donbass Arena in Donetsk. The goal came on the half hour mark when Lescott was totally unmarked from six yards out to nod home an England free-kick that Steven Gerrard swung into the box. England were deserving of their lead and had looked the more adventurous side with wingers James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain getting behind the French defenders and continuously causing problems. Indeed it was Lescott's Manchester City club team mate James Milner who had squandered the best chance of the game when a defence splitting pass put Milner one-on-one with French 'keeper Hugo Lloris who he managed to dribble around before hitting his left footed shot wide. To be fair it was a difficult angle and he was off balanced on his wrong foot but Milner should really have scored.
