Every FIFA World Cup Ranked From Worst To Best
4. Mexico 1970
The first World Cup broadcast in colour, images of the 1970 World Cup are etched into football legend, as part of a tournament remembered for legendary players, games and goals.
It was the World Cup that saw Pelé triumphantly return to the fore alongside seven-goal striker partner Jairzinho. Brazil have simply never been better, scoring 19 goals and winning all six of their games – the first team to do so at a World Cup.
That run included an iconic victory over holders England that many still regard as the greatest 1-0 win in the history of game. However, Brazil saved their best performances for the knockout rounds, beating Peru 4-2 and then old World Cup adversaries Uruguay 3-1 in the semis to set up a final against Italy.
The Azzurri played their part in making it a World Cup to remember in the semi-finals, with a 4-3 victory over West Germany after extra time in a match dubbed the Game of the Century.
Germany played in another all-time classic, coming from two goals down to defeat holders England 3-2 in the quarter-finals. Gerd Muller got the winner, one of 10 goals that earned him the Golden Boot, with Die Mannschaft gaining some modicum of revenge for the controversy of 1966 in the process.
Brazil ultimately proved too strong for a weary Italy in the final, triumphing 4-1 in a win sealed by an iconic team goal scored by Carlos Alberto. Football perfection.
