Southampton New Manager: 6 Candidates To Replace Mauricio Pochettino
4. Uwe Rosler
Another of Glenn Hoddle's Saints signings, former Man City striker Uwe Rosler arrived at Saints in 2000 in the hope that he could provide the goals that would eventually come from a blossoming James Beattie (himself now a manager who kept lowly Accrington Stanley in the league this year). In fact Rosler's only goal of his Saints career was a sentimental one in the celebratory final friendly before the closure of The Dell. Based on his managerial career so far, though, he has a great deal more to offer his former club as a manager than he did as a player. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer won himself a Premier League managerial contract on the strength of his success at Norwegian club Molde, but it was only after Rosler on a short term contract managed an unbeaten run that saved the club from relegation. Since leaving Molde, Rosler has established himself as one of the top managers in the Football League, turning Brentford from a mediocre League 1 club into promotion challengers before leaving for Wigan where he took the club to the Championship play-offs and the cup semi-finals, beating his former club Man City along the way. Rosler has made no secret of his desire to return to the Premier League as a manager. Having narrowly missed out on that possibility with his current club, Saints could provide their former player with just that opportunity. At Brentford, in particular, Rosler enjoyed success with limited resources through strong organisation and structure and good man management that allowed young players to flourish much as Pochettino has done. His commitment to working with experts and sports scientists helped bring out the best in his team and can do the same at St. Mary's.
