10 Terrible Star Trek Episodes With Awesome Endings
4. The Disease
It's the one where Harry Kim gets a space STD, and not without irony, from a member of a supposedly xenophobic species, the Varro. We also learnt that if you want to have sex in Starfleet, you might need to ask the Captain first. I think the 'birds and the bees' might have flown out the airlock a while back. Harry was glowing, but sadly the episode wasn't, save for its final few scenes.
Although finely acted, the love affair between Harry and Derran Tal in The Disease never quite felt as overwhelmingly intense as it was meant to be. In fact, it is only towards the end of Act Four and into Act Five that the episode really reaches its stride. Janeway must reprimand Harry once more for his actions and dismisses him to sickbay. Instead, he follows the Captain from the conference room to the ready room, pleading his case in a pretty awesome tracking shot across the bridge.
There is also some excellent CGI work in those last scenes — particularly the shot of Voyager on its side as it decouples from the generational ship. Ultimately, however, it's the conversation between Janeway and Kim in sickbay that caps the episode. Janeway opens up to Kim in an honest exchange and shows her protective, caring side. The Varro generational ship has fragmented, but the crew of Voyager are more united than ever — not as Starfleet officers, but as a family.
