6. Strike!

To be clear, the reasons for the strike were absolutely valid. Streaming has changed how everyone consumes their favourite shows and movies, and in the case of Star Trek, that's pretty much its entire back catalogue these days!

The SAG-AFTRA and Writers' Guild strikes, combined, lasted for over 100 days and saw Star Trek cast united outside studios to protest against what they saw as unfair treatment and pay regarding the changing world of acting.

Its inclusion here is because, inevitably, it caused delays across the franchise. Season two of Strange New Worlds saw a cliffhanger ending that may now not be resolved onscreen until 2025. Discovery just managed to squeeze filming in before the strike but it could well mean that its final season is the only new live-action streaming series of 2024.

There will of course be new episodes of Prodigy, promised by Netflix, but the strikes also paused progress on Section 31 and the upcoming Starfleet Academy series. The former is due to go in front of the cameras in late January 2024 which probably means it will only make its way to Paramount+ in 2025.

A Star Trek fan from birth, I love to dive into every aspect of the franchise in front and behind the screen. There's something here that's kept me interested for the best part of four decades! Now I'm getting back into writing and using Star Trek as my first line of literary attack. If I'm not here on WhatCulture then you're more than welcome to come and take a look at my blog, Some Kind of Star Trek at http://SKoST.co.uk or maybe follow me on Twitter as @TheWarpCore. Sometimes I force myself not to talk about Star Trek.
