10 Actors Who Totally Transformed Themselves For TV Shows

4. Robert Llewellyn - Red Dwarf

Until he won the role of neurotic android Kryten on legendary Brit comedy Red Dwarf, Robert Llewellyn was a successful comedian albeit not particularly well-known to the mainstream.

Kryten became Llewellyn's star-making role, albeit one which saw him layered under so many prosthetics as to be totally and utterly unrecognisable to anyone who might know who he was.

To transform the shape of his head, Llewellyn wore a rubber mask which was then blended to fit in with his eyes, giving him a look at once undeniably not-human yet retaining something the audience could identify with.

The original makeup process took as long as six hours and proved extremely uncomfortable for the actor, though by the seventh series, this had been streamlined down to just two hours along with a redesigned, more comfortable mask.

Combine this with Kryten's bulky body suit and Llewellyn's decision to affect a Canadian accent, and the iconic android is a million miles away from the bloke who would go on to host Scrapheap Challenge.
