The mind of Alex Garland is something to be revered. The man has been responsible for some of the most gripping films over the past two decades, writing the likes of 28 Days Later, Ex Machina and Annihilation (while also directing the latter two). His creative genius is evident when it comes to innovative science fiction tales, but perhaps none of his work is quite as thought-provoking as his latest offering: Devs.

Where to even begin with Devs? The miniseries about a woman who investigates the unexplained death of her boyfriend one day after working at the mysterious Devs is one of the most clever pieces of storytelling to grace either of our screens this year. It's a slow burn but that's what ultimately makes it so compelling, because it takes its time unravelling the inexplicable, forcing us to question everything that unfolds and then just forcing us to question everything.

Being a miniseries, Devs will only ever consist of eight episodes but it makes each one of them last, exploring themes of existentialism, the role of technology in humanity's evolution and the dangers of the unknown elements in life. And it offers up fantastic performances from Sonoya Mizuno and the incomparable Nick Offerman.
