10 Anime That Have No Right To Be This Good
7. Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Magical girls are the kind of thing you need to expect in anime. They are normally pretty harmless, as you either love them or are entirely indifferent towards them. While many people (this author included) side with the latter, there is one exceptional show that should still fall under your radar as it's quite a thrilling ride. It's called *deep breath* Puella Magi Madoka Magica.
This show follows a group of young middle-schoolers who take out contracts to become Magical Girls and fight against enemies known as witches. But, the warnings of a Magical Girl named Homura soon start to make sense, as it seems there is a painful price to be paid when undertaking these roles.
You'd be mistaken in thinking this is a sugary coated and cute anime, as it's far from it. The show is shockingly dark, with the adorable visuals only serving to take you by surprise. It's packed with death, sombreness, despair and a heaping host of shocking moments that challenge the conventions of the Magical Girl subgenre.
The whole purpose of this show is to act as a mash-up of cuteness and nihilism, which is why it's so perfect for a list like this.
