Hoping to seek fame for himself and fortune for his village, Tatsumi journeys to the Capital to enlist in the army. Having been separated from his friends, Tatsumi makes it to the Capital, only to face its harsh realities. He is rejected by the army, due to having too many applicants already, and then robbed by a beautiful blond bombshell who promised to help him join the army if he gave her all of his money. With nowhere else to go, Tatsumi is forced to sleep on the streets, until a carriage stops in front of him and he is offered to come stay at a nobles' mansion.

Finally feeling like he found his big break, Tatsumi swears to protect the family from the feared assassins Night Raid, who have been killing numerous nobles around the Capital. That is until the night when the family is attacked by Night Raid, and they reveal that the family of nobles are actually monsters who take in people off the street, and often experiment on, then kill them. They keep the bodies in their back house, with Tatsumi likely being their next victim. Once the bodies of his friends are found in said house, one being dead and the other at death's door, Tatsumi doesn’t hesitate to kill the last remaining member of the nightmarish family.

Now with once again nowhere to go, Tatsumi is offered the chance to join Night Raid and stop people like the murderous family from using their power and wealth to hurt the poor and innocent. Full of ups and downs, comedic mishaps and heartbreaking losses, Tatsumi does his best to ensure that what happened to him and his friends never happens to anyone again.
