Going back in time just ten years, it feels like you could count animated shows created for adults on the fingers of your hands. If you go even further back, all the way to the '90s for example, you would probably only need one hand.

For someone born in the 2000s, that probably sounds made up, but animated shows weren't always as ubiquitous as they are today. It all started with The Simpsons, whose massive mainstream success not only inspired other shows, but also made the TV networks and audiences aware of the fact that animation is a genuine format that adults can enjoy. Soon enough, networks were trying to replicate that success and we got the chance to see shows like Beavis & Butthead, King of the Hill, and South Park all appear on our TV screens.

Fast forward to today and adult animation is everywhere. The notion that “animation is for kids” has become as archaic as CRT television sets, and some of the best comedy shows available on streaming today are, in fact, animated and not live-action.

With that in mind, we’ve assembled a list of ten hilarious animated shows that are currently available for streaming on Netflix.

10. Big Mouth

Netflix

We kick things off with the raunchy teen comedy created by Nick Kroll, Andrew Goldberg, Jennifer Flackett, and Mark Levin. Big Mouth premiered on Netflix in September 2017 and there are currently five seasons available for streaming, with the sixth one coming in the near future.

Real-life friends since childhood, Kroll and Goldberg based the story on their own experiences, trying to be as open and frank as possible about puberty and everything that comes along with it. The result is an incredibly gross, but empathetic show that is not afraid to explore awkward issues, in its own foul-mouthed way.

The animation is simplistic and basic, but the focus in Big Mouth is on the characters and their relationships. The dialogue is smart and dynamic, and the voice-acting performance are simply brilliant. There is a lot of familiar names attached to the show -- aside from Kroll himself, there are also John Mulaney, Jason Mantzoukas, Fred Armisen, Jenny Slate, Maya Rudolph, Jordan Peele... you get the picture -- and they are all clearly having a lot of fun with characters.

Just like you will, as soon as you start watching.
