10 Best Anime Romances Of All Time
3. Shirayuki And Zen (Snow White With The Red Hair)
The reason that Shoujo anime relies so heavily on its overly flowery narration, arch characters, melodramatic tone, and generally saccharine storytelling is because when it works, it works like freaking gangbusters.
And Snow White With The Red Hair is the best example of those tropes being applied with the hands of a master (ironically this was mangaka Sorata Akazuki's first published work. Way to make a first impression...).
Shirayuki is a highly intelligent, ambitious young herbalist who fled her country when she was chosen to be made the personal concubine of the crown prince. Along the way, she met and quickly befriended the prince of the neighbouring country of Wisteria, Prince Zen.
Zen, being a compassionate and scholarly prince, managed to get the forced marriage called off and Shirayuki a job working for him as an herbalist. From there, their relationship blossoms into one of the sweetest and most compelling romances in anime history.
It's certainly not the most realistic romance anime out there, not by a longshot, but it's beautifully written where it counts, the two are very well defined characters, their chemistry is heartwarming, and it's a shame that the show only got two seasons because for every heartwarming moments in the anime, the manga has two.
