10 Best British TV Shows Of 2018
1. A Very English Scandal
Arriving in early Summer, A Very English Scandal was on a whole other level in comparison to everything else we've seen this year. Much like Patrick Melrose, it's a series that's hard to put into words, but that's one of the elements that made it so blooming incredible.
Drawing from John Preston's book of the same name, the three-part series is a dramatisation of the infamous Jeremy Thorpe scandal, and acting powerhouses Hugh Grant and Ben Whishaw deliver career-defining performances. It's not just one thing that makes A Very English Scandal great, however, but rather a collaboration of several different efforts. Doctor Who legend Russell T Davies pens the scripts, Stephen Frears directs, and the brilliant Dominic Treadwell-Collins executive produces. A match made in heaven.
The sheer brilliance of these scripts is one of Davies' greatest accomplishments to date, as he manages to create the perfect blend of comedy and drama required to tell this unique story, and the end result is something utterly superb. It's not just the UK that has lapped it up either, as it's been received really well in the U.S, where it aired on Amazon, and has deservedly received a load of award nominations as a result.
A Very English Scandal isn't just the best British TV series of the year, but one of the greatest of all time. A masterpiece from beginning to end.
