10 Best Cliffhangers Of Modern Doctor Who

2. The Impossible Planet

Doctor Who The Impossible Planet
BBC Studios

The cliffhanger for this episode is very much like the episode itself- perfect in every way. The eighth episode of David Tennant's tenure sees The Doctor and Rose Tyler stumbling upon a planet that is somehow orbiting a black hole, but they are not the only ones down there. Travellers from Earth, aided by a slave race named the Ood, have made their way on to the planet in an attempt to mine the power source, but they now find themselves under attack from Satan himself.

The finale is nothing short of phenomenal, with the now possessed Ood beginning to slaughter the crew. At the same time, the Doctor is on the planet's surface when a mysterious tomb opens with the voice of the devilish creature screaming out "Now I am free". In another complication, the opening of the tomb causes the planet to fall out of its orbit and begins falling into the black hole.

While the multi layered threats work in and of themselves, the amazing acting and great chemistry from Tennant, Billie Piper and an amazing support cast makes the situation all the more absorbing. It's a powerhouse ending and while the follow up episode, The Satan's Pit, resolves the issues a little easily, it doesn't take away from the brilliant cliffhanger that places this deservingly near the top of this list.

With all the suave and sophistication of any Aussie half way through a slab, Luke will critique every minute detail of films and shows from all eras- unless it's 1990's Simpsons episodes, because they're just perfect
