10 Best Crime TV Shows (Since Breaking Bad)
9. American Crime Story
While less lauded than its Horror cousin, American Crime Story is another anthology series in a great era for the format. Each season takes a look at, unsurprisingly, an American crime, and its two seasons so far have displayed great attention to detail, seldom sensationalising and providing a genuinely informative retelling of dark periods in history.
O.J Simpson’s murder trial was the focus of the first season, taking viewers deep into a story many probably felt they were already familiar with. Hitherto-unexplored faucets like the frustrations of the sequestered jury gave us insight, and it was packed with great performances from Sarah Paulson and Sterling K. Brown (as well as bizarrely bad ones from Cuba Gooding jr and John Travolta).
Season two’s plot was the murder of Gianni Versace, and again the show was praiseworthy for its straightforward, intelligent telling of a story which didn’t need to be sensationalised.
The third run, scheduled for release this autumn, looks at the Clinton/Lewinsky story, with casting inspired (Beanie Feldstein as Lewinsky) and unexpected (Clive Owen as Clinton) to look forward to. High hopes for this one.
