2024 began with rumours that Millie Gibson would be leaving Doctor Who, despite the fact that she’d only just made her debut.

Tabloids claimed that Andor actor Varada Sethu was joining the show as the Fifteenth Doctor’s next companion, a fact that was all but confirmed when she was spotted on set alongside Ncuti Gatwa.

Having remained silent on the matter for so long, the BBC’s decision to confirm her casting shortly before the Season 1 premiere seemed somewhat suspicious. Indeed, WhoCulture jokingly speculated that the production was about to do another Oswin Oswald, and have Varada Sethu show up a whole season early.

And to everyone’s surprise that’s exactly what happened, with Sethu making her Doctor Who debut in Boom – albeit as a separate, unconnected character called Mundy Flynn. So more Martha than Clara.

Sure, it’s possible that there’s more to it than that, and maybe there’s a reason why the Doctor’s new companion looks so much like the woman he met on Kastarion 3.

Regardless, it was a brilliant reveal – yet another thing to send fans’ heads spinning in what was already a very tense, stressful episode. Props to the production team for managing to keep it under wraps for over a year!
