2. 73 Yards Is Unveiled
In March 2023 RTD described 73 Yards as “one of the greatest things I’ve ever made in my life”.
Over a year later we got to see it for ourselves. And it was well worth the wait.
Frustrating though it was to have two Doctor-lite stories in such a short season, the format was used to great effect here, giving Millie Gibson a chance to shine as she navigates life without her new best friend.
But of course the most compelling aspect of 73 Yards was “The Woman” – the wraith-like figure following Ruby from a very specific distance, with the power to turn all her friends against her. It’s an instantly creepy idea that comes to a thrilling head at the story’s end, when the Woman is revealed to be none other than Ruby herself.
Lots is left to interpretation – but that only makes it more intriguing. And that final sequence, as the Woman finally comes closer to Ruby and we loop back to the beginning, is chilling and yet strangely melancholy – almost like, as Ruby did, you've waited your entire life for normalcy to return.
It was like Midnight had a weird baby with Turn Left – a simple but stirring adventure that stays with you long after the credits roll.
