4. A Company Of Men (S2E2)
The solo travels of Prince Philip continue in this episode, with the unimaginable happening to the audience - we actually feel sorry for him. Out at sea without the love and support of his family, Philip's previous debonair demeanour comes to a screeching halt when he is asked during an interview about his family.
This leads to a genuinely moving Christmas message, brilliantly delivered by Matt Smith to display the first sense of real emotional vulnerability in the man. The speech truly does make us sympathise with him and makes us contemplate that he may not be the chauvinistic dick that we all believe he is.
While the fallback that Prime Minister Eden faces due to the forced withdrawal of troops in Egypt is explored adequately, it is the other sub plot involving divorce proceedings issued towards a close associate of Philip that adds extra spice. With news coming through that Eileen Parker, the wife of Philip's private secretary Michael, has made the decision to leave her husband, the implications that this turn of events could lead to Philip's own infidelity being revealed is tension building at its finest.
