6. Fire And Blood (Season 1, Episode 10)

€œIf you think this has a happy ending, you haven€™t been paying attention.€ The Bastard of Bolton has a point, as it€™s hard to imagine this show concluding with a €œhappily ever after.€ But for one brief, beautiful moment at the end of Season 1, we finally get that storybook ending the series typically tries to avoid. To date, the show has never provided an image as triumphant and powerful as Daenerys emerging from a funeral pyre, unharmed, wearing nothing but three newborn dragons. Subsequent season finales have tried to capture the magic of this moment, but neither €œValar Morghulis€ or €œMhysa€ live up to Season 1€™s final episode. What €œFire and Blood€ accomplishes so well is concluding the stories of the first season while perfectly setting up events for the second. Robb Stark becomes the King in the North and joins in the war for the Iron Throne to avenge is family. Jon Snow is recruited for an expedition to travel beyond the Wall to find his uncle. Dragons return to the world after everyone thought they were gone forever. All these moments subsequently provide the audience with closure for one story, and anticipation for more, which is what any great finale should do. It may not be a traditionally happy ending, but it€™s the closest this show has ever come.
