10 Best Netflix Comedy Specials Of 2020
2. Aziz Ansari - Right Now
Another come back - though perhaps this hiatus wasn't as long and the reasons for it were very different reasons. After being accused of sexual misconduct in 2018, Aziz Ansari took a break from both comedy and television, and removed himself from the public eye altogether.
A year later, with little to no marketing before its release, Ansari came back on the scene with Right Now. As was the case with Rock's Tamborine, Right Now was, compared to Ansari's previous specials, very stripped back and minimal. Directed by Spike Jonze, the whole thing had the vibe of being filmed in a seedy dive bar - despite the packed theatre that was actually its setting. Ansari himself appeared different. The impeccable suit was out. The Metallica t-shirt and Vans were in. He also spent the hour perched on a stool - might seem like a pointless detail, but it did a lot to elevate the message that Ansari was trying to get across.
Straight off the bat, Ansari addresses the allegations - and we aren't here to say whether he did a good job or not, but...at least he acknowledged what he did. But it's not just Ansari's humility nor the aesthetic that makes this worth watching. Ansari does away with his usual - often grating - shouty, over the top humour for a quieter vibe that suits the topics he chooses to skewer. These include trying to out woke one another, race relations and fake wokeness. That last one he illustrates using Crazy Rich Asians and a pepperoni pizza. Confused? Cool. Watch it.
