1. James Acaster - Repertoire

This isn't just a perfectly constructed bit of stand up comedy, it's four perfectly constructed hours of impeccable stand up comedy, each hour of which feeds and blends into one another.

Acaster is a master storyteller. Whilst most comedians will have two, maybe three, callbacks throughout a set, Acaster's entire set - and the three successive ones - are callback after callback, essentially morphing into an intricate four hour meta-loop in-joke. If all that sounds a bit too artsy or weird, then fear not! We assure you that every moment is absolutely hilarious.

The first quarter of Repertoire's first part starts off with Acaster taking advantage of a "loop hole" involving performing on his knees before discussing his nemesis at Pret a Manger - though most of the hour concerns his time as an undercover cop. The fourth ends with him delivering a quarter of the hour from the perspective of a wooden duck with his back to the audience.

Amongst all the weirdness, Acaster also peppers in standard observational comedy - yes, you're right, James, it's very weird trying to massage your partner in bed. He even manages the odd bit of political humour - try and find a better Brexit metaphor than Acaster's. But most importantly, amongst the surreal, Repertoire - and each individual hour - is actually deeply personal. If you dig just beneath its surface you realise that all of these metaphors and weirdness are a way for a man to be indirectly open about his personal and emotional struggles. Repertoire is over the top, beautiful, flawless and, above all, hysterical.
