9. Sweet Tooth

Midnight Mass
Netflix

Based on the comic book of the same name, this fantasy drama follows a group of human-animal hybrids living in a fictional post-pandemic future.

The original comic, created by Canadian writer Jeff Lemire in 2009, has a noticeably darker tone than the Netflix adaptation, and it turns out that was a conscious decision. Lemire himself, along with the showrunner Jim Mickle, felt that the "post-apocalyptic dystopia" genre has become over-saturated and wanted to bring a new, more light-hearted perspective.

The result is a warm and emotional story about a 10-year-old named Gus, who is half-boy and half-deer, looking for his mother. While it remains largely true to the comic, the new approach is felt instantly, and it is clear that it was the right thing to do. The characters feel very vibrant and relatable, their adventures become something you easily get invested in, and the general atmosphere of the Sweet Tooth universe has a very immersive quality to it.

The concept is truly unusual and unique, but it works.
