Phoebe Waller-Bridge reaffirmed her status as one of the most exciting creatives in TV right now with Killing Eve. While she didn't star in it as she did the similarly great Fleabag, Killing Eve was developed by the Solo star. Waller-Bridge also wrote four episodes including the pilot and finale, and it carries her unique voice throughout all eight exhilarating instalments.

Killing Eve is an invigorating entry into the spy genre, pitting Sandra Oh's Eve, an MI5 officer, against Jodie Comer's Villanelle, a highly-skilled assassin. What follows is a thrilling, dangerous game of cat-and-mouse, with those positions frequently reversed, as each learns more about the other and attempts to gain the upper hand.

There's a dark, often wry humour to the show, which has a playfulness that nicely complements its suspense. There are no real heroes here, but it puts a great twist on the anti-hero trope, with a decidedly feminine bent that deals with obsession, attraction, and isn't afraid to get weird, leading to one of TV's best surprises of 2018.
