10 Best Slasher Horror TV Shows

4. Harper's Island

American Horror Story 1984
CBS

Little-known CBS series Harper’s Island originally aired back in 2009, but the murder mystery slasher remains one of the better genre offerings to have graced the small screen. Taking a leaf out of Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None, the show centres on the guests of a wedding, who are invited to stay on the titular Harper’s Island for the celebrations despite a murder spree that occurred there seven years earlier. When the killings seem to begin again, daughter of the Sheriff who apprehended the original murderer and close friend of the groom, Abby Mills becomes caught up in between the secrets of the island and its suspects.

Thanks to the format, the season contains myriad twists and turns, with at least one death in each of the 13 episodes. These shock killings were kept so secret within filming that even the cast members themselves were not aware of who would die, or when, until they received each episode’s script - so first time viewers should certainly have a thrilling time trying to unravel the mystery between the gory and satisfying murders.

Despite not being renewed for a second season, Harper’s Island functions perfectly as a limited series. The self contained story is deftly resolved by the end of its run time, making for a satisfying conclusion to both the puzzle and the violence.
