4. We’re Gonna Finally Be Fine
We’re Gonna Finally Be Fine was the opening song of Season Three, playing as the first thing viewers heard. It was a happy, sugary sweet sound, and might just be the most gleeful middle finger a TV show ever flashed its own network.
In response to the network notes to try to be less meta and edgy while also toning down the romantic tension between Jeff and Annie, Community put together this most malicious act of compliance. It was bright, peppy and fun, like those other sitcoms people had actually heard of it. However, the lyrics were laced deep with the magic of Community’s slightly off kilter humour.
Aside from all the laughs, it also gave us a rare opportunity to enjoy Yvette Nicole Brown’s amazing voice too.
Some of the characters matchups for the lyrics are complete genius too. Perennial downer Britta claims ‘we’re gonna be more happy’, while Abed says ‘we’re gonna be more calm and normal’, despite the fact most of the meta riffs come from him.
Then there’s the Dean in drag promising to be ‘a mainstream dream’ and the manic Chang claiming to ‘appeal to all mankind’. Catchy, but incredibly clever too.
