Star Trek: Deep Space Nine combined darkness and emotion like no other franchise entry has done before or since. The fifth season episode The Darkness And The Light depicts a serious and deadly threat that hangs over Major Kira for the entire runtime.

Deep Space Nine knew how to depict darkness. What it also knew how to do was to show the heroes in shades of grey. Kira had spent much of her early life murdering Cardassians in an attempt to rid Bajor of the occupying force. Silarin Prin was a victim of one of her attacks.

He was crippled in an explosion set by her resistance cell, driven mad by in his injuries. Throughout the episode, his revenge comes hard and fast, picking off members of the cell. He finally captures Kira as she comes to capture him - with Randy Ogelsby in terrifying form as the deranged man, professing to rip the baby out of Kira's womb so that an innocent life won't be killed.

Kira manages to kill him, but he leaves such an impact on her that she is forced to look inward and consider what she has done.
