To have a mysterious secondary or tertiary character operate without a formal name is one thing - to have your lead go nameless is a braver proposition altogether. But it’s precisely this that makes Fleabag’s protagonist so relatable - she could be any one of us, the walking personification of a hot mess.
Fleabag’s two seasons spun a delicate tale of heartbreak, anxiety, unrequited love and ultimately hope. It was a show about letting go of tragedy, coping mechanisms, difficult families, self improvement.
While we might not all have fallen in love with a priest or stolen a priceless artwork, the themes of the show were so rich and resonant, achieving an enormous amount in just six hours of television. In keeping the titular character nameless, we could extrapolate her experiences into our own.
