10 Best TV Episodes Of 2019

1. Ronny/Lily - Barry

Barry ronny/lily
HBO

A show about a hitman trying and failing to get out the game, Barry's Season 2 episode ronny/lily sees Bill Hader's title character blackmailed into assassinating a man named Ronny, a simple premise which spirals wildly out of control in one of the most inventive episodes of TV from this year.

Directed by Hader as well, the ep is testament to just how much you can accomplish in 30 minutes, as the comedy of errors escalates steadily when Barry's hit goes wrong (it turns out Ronny is a master of Taekwondo, and so is his daughter Lily).

The episode is essentially one long chase/fight sequence, but it's astonishing because of just how economical every scene is. The action comes thick and fast, but it's there to tell a story, effortlessly moving from drama, to comedy, to tragedy, and then back to comedy again.

In fact, the way it's staged is almost like a well told joke, with set ups and punchlines being delivered through the way Hader frames each scene.

If you hadn't heard of Barry before this, ronny/lily will make you a true believer, and it only makes us excited to see what else the series can offer in the future.
