Not every controversy is a bad thing. Former King of Queens star, Leah Remini, left the Church of Scientology after 30 years. The beauty of the story is that it is a proverbial onion that continues to expose wonderfully entertaining layers about Remini's distaste for the celebrity-driven religion. Initially, when Remini left the church in 2013, she claimed it was due to church policies regarding the abuse of some members and the labeling of some people as "suppressive persons". In 2014, Remini said she left the church because of her daughter Sofia. She said Sofia's young life was starting to resemble Remini's childhood in the church and wanted better for her. 2015 brought about the best layer yet. In October, Remini specifically called out super Scientology poster- boy Tom Cruise as a motivating factor for her leaving the church. In a 20/20 interview, she stated that Cruise is so important to the church that they cannot be separated and that "the church's mindset is such it interprets an attack on Cruise as an attack on the church". With any luck, in 2016 Remini will cite John Travolta's performance in Swordfish as another pretext for her departure from the church.
