After three long decades in development hell, Neil Gaiman's cult classic comic will finally be adapted for the screen.

The comic book was published by DC Comics from 1989 to 1996, and talks of a movie adaptation started way back in 1991, but it was scrapped and picked up again so many times that everybody has probably lost count by now.

Several years ago, Warner Bros. shifted their focus away from the cinema and into streaming and managed to sign a deal with Netflix in 2019 to produce a series. Production on the first season wrapped in 2021, and the eleven episodes should drop by the end of this year.

The dark, supernatural show will follow Dream (the titular Sandman, played by Tom Sturridge) as he escapes from captivity after 105 years and sets out to restore order to his kingdom. Gaiman has promised that the series will try to recreate the comic books as faithfully as possible, and it will be interesting to see how the unique blend of mythology, history, and horror will translate onto a new medium.
