One of the simpler ways of approaching an opening sequence is to have a montage of mock home photographs; it's been done many times before, to varying effect.

This is the approach How I Met Your Mother takes - and it works here; what it lacks in innovation it makes up for in brevity. A simple, upbeat song accompanies the photos (an instrumental version of The Solids’ “Hey Beautiful”), and the titles effectively set the New York scene, introduces the characters and their close bonds, and makes room for the series' titular framing device. That's a lot to achieve - all in the tiny space of just 12 seconds!
