10 Completely Insulting TV Plot Twists
8. Julian Albert Is Doctor Alchemy - The Flash
If you're going to introduce a new character and a new villain at the same time, it's best to make sure you're not doing it in a way that makes it painfully obvious that they're one and the same.
First of all, if you don't want people to automatically think a new character is the villain, don't cast someone like Tom Felton as Julian Albert, who, despite being pretty great in the role he's been given, will forever be branded a villain thanks to the Harry Potter franchise. It would be like casting Willem Dafoe or Jason Isaacs: the bigger twist would be if they WEREN'T playing the villain.
The main argument against Albert being Doctor Alchemy, the menacing new villain, was that it would be too obvious. That's not a great sign.
While not every obvious plot twist is a bad one, the fact that the Alchemy reveal was so drawn out had fans hoping that the man behind the mast would be literally anyone except Julian, the man that had been antagonizing Barry Allen from the second he had been introduced.
The reveal stings particularly hard in the light of the context. Arrow, in the same year, had prevented Prometheus' identity from being obvious through some stellar character work and writing. Additionally, the slow burn to Savitar's reveal later the same season was also handled much better.
Honestly, the best option here would have been to reveal Alchemy's identity to the audience much earlier to prevent the inevitable disappointment.
