10 Confusing Game Of Thrones Moments Nobody Understands

5. Stannis' Smoke Monster

Game Of Thrones has had a lot of recognisable guest stars over the years, but do you remember that time the smoke monster from Lost made an appearance?

OK, so it's not the same one, but when an apparently pregnant Melisandre - a Red Priestess and advisor/lover of would-be King Stannis Boratheon - birthed some man-shaped smoke inside a cave, many viewers were scratching their heads and harking back to the infamously impenetrable Lost.

The explanation for exactly why and how the coupling of Stannis and Melisandre resuted in a temporarily sentient wisp of smoke has not yet been explained and probably never will be. It's magic, deal with it. The smoke monster did assassinate Stannis' brother and rival for the Iron Throne, King Renly. It was perfectly done - Renly dies, no one quite knows how, and no one can link anything back to Stannis.

So, why not do it again? Why not make a list of enemies like Arya Stark does and have your smoke babies smoke-murder them?

Using magic powers as a Deux Ex Machina is pretty strange, never using them again for no real reason is even stranger.
