10 Confusing TV Shows That Nobody Understands

6. Fringe

With Lost mastermind JJ Abrams at the helm, 2009 debut Fringe was always bound to become more complicated than its initially simple premise implied.

The show followed Anna Torv and Joshua Jackson as a stoic government agent and the son of a mad scientist who are thrown together in a race against time to solve some sort of maybe-supernatural, definitely complicated conspiracy.

But before long, this apparent X-Files rip-off was moving into crazier and more complex territory than Chris Carter's series ever dared to touch upon.

Whether it was the intersecting timelines, the multiple versions of events, or the eventual bombshell revelation that the show had thus far taken place in an alternate universe (there's something viewers could have done with knowing earlier), this series was trippier, odder, and more ambitiously weird than almost any sci fi series had endeavoured to be before it.
