You knew it was coming: controversial sci fi director JJ Abrams divisive 2004 debut Lost is infamous amongst TV fans for being almost impossible to follow, but so addictive that no one could resist an attempt to unlock its secrets.

Yes, the eventual finale transpired to be both too over-complicated and too predictable in its general conceit (it's the twist you guessed in the second episode, give or take a few convoluted details).

But during its original run this cult series combined techniques like flashbacks, flash forwards, and the infamous flash sideways to alternate timelines in order to complicate the story of its large, ever-changing cast and obscure the mystery of what this island they crash landed on was and why they were sent there.

It may not have stuck the landing (sorry), but at its most shamelessly complicated and ambitious, this enigmatic sci fi series really did soar.
